Martyn Watkins

jwortley6

This message was originally drafted on Friday 4th October and to share the news with you that Martyn Watkins was retiring on that day as a business partner, director and co-founder of Abovo-Consult. However, I now have the very sad duty of announcing that tragically for us Martyn passed away peacefully on the same evening. You may have seen this on Linkedin already, however, we know that not everyone uses that medium. It’s been a difficult week last week for us coming to terms with news.

Martyn had been ill for a very short period of time and bore the illness bravely and stoically and intensely privately. I know this will be a shock to many, and whilst the retirement was planned, we did not expect Martyn to pass so soon.

Many of you will know Martyn as a leading and inspirational consultant within the social housing finance sector for over 36 years working at PWC, DTZ, Weedon Grant and Capita. The last 9 years have been as a director and co-founder of Abovo-Consult. Many will remember Martyn from stock transfer days.

Martyn was from Wales and very passionate about his roots. He loved working in Wales and often would take his camera and/or his fishing rod and make a detour home from trips. He was very much a family man and loved spending time with his wife and sons and their partners. In recent years, Martyn has had a constant companion in the office with their dog, Jay.

When I asked him what he would like to say about retiring, Martyn said “I will miss you all dearly, but old lags like me have to recognise that it’s time to move on and make space for new blood and new ideas”.

I personally have worked with Martyn for almost 20 years, and he was my colleague, an amazing mentor over the years, the greatest challenger of theory I ever met, but above all else a gentleman and a friend. We thank him for his time, support and endless knowledge over the years. We will miss him dearly, Abovo-Consult is thriving as a result of his legacy and will continue to do so.

Martyn’s funeral is to be held on Monday 4th November – if you would like any details, or would like to attend, please let us know. It will be family flowers only and donations will be collected for St. Michael’s Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK. The link below gives details of the funeral and the family tribute. It also had a link to make any online donations to the charities, as clients and colleagues have been asking for how they can do this:

We are so very sorry to share this news.
